The work of Prof. Fauzie Hasibuan, as its title suggests, presents a geological and paleontological study on Misool Archipelago, which lies in the eastern part of Indonesia, in the Mesozoic Era. It tells, among other things, that in the Triassic Era the Misool Archipelago was linked to the Indonesian island of Buru, Seram, and Sumatra. At the time its faunas were very similar to those of the European Alps and Mediterranean. In the Jurassic Era, due to the bivalve remains, this archipelago was very similar to the Sula Islands, but the two regions were different in the sense that assemblages of belemnites replaced good ammonite assemblages. At the same time, the archipelago can be connected to the Indonesian region of Central Papua and other regions such as European Alps, North America, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Northwestern Australia, north and south Tibet, and Himalaya. In the Cretaceous Era, as the microfossils showed, the archipelago was linked to European Cretaceous. Macrofossils like inoceramids can be linked to Madagascar in the Middle Campanian. This study also presents the first biostratigraphic scheme with the most comprehensivecompilation everwritten since the last century. The study of the Mesozoic rocks in particular had long been neglected due to misconception that these rocks were generally lacking in economic prospects. Since 1977 the hydrocarbon production of Indonesia has declined steadily, from 1.6 million barrels a day to less than i.o million barrels a day in 2007. The exploration of. untapped reserves within the Indonesian Archipelago is a big challenge that requires huge investments. Eastern Indonesia has a huge oil and gas reserves but the real amount has not been measured yet. This area has a number of sedimentary basins, which are comparable to Western Indonesia. This book is definitely worth reading for a better understanding of the fauna and geologic history of this part of Indonesia, which bears the most complete sequences of Mesozoic strata. It is also important as a reference section for adjacent areas. Its biostratigraphic scheme presents detailed information about Mesozoic rocks for the-benefit of hydrocarbon exploration in the areas._ Here, the geoscience factor plays an important role in discovering oil and gas reserves as one of the main tasks of the Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. |
