SHORTER EDITION The Shorter Edition of is a distillation, from the complete edition, of those stories that will be most useful and attractive for the shorter course in fiction. From the advice and recommendations of hundreds of classroom teachers, the editor�himself a distinguished teacher and author of fiction�has here selected over fifty stories that "awe" and "delight" him, and that he has found especially teachable. The result is a book in the great tradition of Norton anthologies. Many of the stories have been published in the twentieth century�almost half of them since 1945�but all the earlier masters are well represented. Several authors are represented by two stories apiece, and the stories have been arranged alphabetically by author, to provide instructors with the utmost freedom in suiting their choices to any course in the reading of fiction.
